Main Street South Carolina is an organizational process which is locally initiated, guided and implemented. This is not a grant or loan program. Participation will require a commitment of time and human resources from the local Main Street program as outlined below.
One organization or entity must assume responsibility for local sponsorship of the program. This entity must be willing to assume responsibility for coordinating the start-up phase and ensuring ongoing full cooperation and compliance in the program.
Revitalization efforts have little chance for success without the enthusiastic support of local government and business leaders.
Educating and training downtown and neighborhood leaders is critical to the success of the local revitalization planning and implementation process.
Main Street South Carolina provides extensive technical assistance and training provided by a network of professionals with a broad base of experience in downtown or neighborhood revitalization.
The local Main Street program must provide funds to cover certain expenses as outlined below.
As a Main Street South Carolina participant, the city or town makes a long-term commitment to establish and fund a revitalization organization with paid professional staff.
Do not apply for this program if you are not willing to make at least a three-year commitment to sustain an organization and conduct a local campaign to fund your program as a public-private partnership.
Main Street SC and the team of revitalization professionals provides training opportunities for the local program’s staff, board of directors and interested committee members while the community is in the Classic program. Local programs must cover the costs associated with travel, meals and lodging when attending training including the National Main Street Conference (mandatory every other year).
Local hosts are responsible for all meeting arrangements and publicity for training scheduled within the community. Responsibilities include providing meeting facilities and refreshments for participants.
To encourage participation at the local level, the local Main Street organization will be responsible for distributing information (e.g., meeting notices, promotion announcements) to all pertinent local participants and local media.
Name the five largest employers in your community, including the number of people they employ and how they will support the local Main Street program.
Applicants must submit a minimum of four photographs.
Photographs should focus on buildings, streetscapes and public improvements in the downtown area.
Provide pictures of recent façade improvements, building rehabilitations or store signs.
Be sure digital photographs are no smaller than 3” x 5” or 300 dpi.
