Aloha and Welcome
to our emission calculation and offset tool. This tool is designed to generate an emission estimation of your Tourism Business in Paradise within a short time.
If you run into problems, you can always contact us with your question by mailing us at emission.calculator@carbonbuddy.com
This is how it works:
Save your progress at any time with the "save" button. This will allow you to come back to your calculation at a later point..
Set the time period for this calculation.
If you calculate emissions for an entire year (365 days) and offset 100% of your emissions you will automatically receive a #CarbonDashboard and ClimateBuddyLabel at NO charge. You can use these tools to display your climate leadership on your website, social media and wherever you are in contact with your customers so they know you are doing business climate neutral.
If you wish to receive these tools (digital versions) at NO charge please calculate and offset emissions for an entire year.
Within this form we will ask you about a variety of emissions produced by your operation.
By providing accurate information, you will learn about the emissions (in metric tons) your business produces to provide its service/product to your customers/guests for the time period set above.
Simply fill all fields that apply to you and leave others blank.
Please remember: The calculation is only as good as the data you enter!
Note: In case you wish to only determine emissions for a certain branch or product of your business operation, simply enter only information related to the specific branch or product.
If you have operations on more than one Island, it is best to calculate emissions seperate for each Island.
Please enter the combined number of trips that any person from your business takes to each Island.

Please provide information on your vehicles to determine your ground transportation emissions.
Please note: In case it is easier for you to provide the total amount of gallons (gasoline, diesel and/or biodiesel) used by your business, you can do that in the "Energy" section later in the calculation.
Check ALL vehicles types your business uses.
Please Note: If you operate Plug-in Hybrid Vehicles, you will need to enter the the car twice. One time at the gasoline section (where you enter its gasoline consumption) and one time at the electric/plug-in hybrid section where you enter its electricity consumption.
Please note: Emissions from electricity are based on the average energy mix of your island. In case your vehicle is charged by renewable energy only, simply leave this field at "0" even if you have consumed electricity for your vehicle(s).

Sometimes it can be difficult to get the correct numbers for the fields below. Particularly if you calculate emissions for the first time and do not have records. In this case, please provide your best estimates. Simply fill in all fields that apply to your business ( i.e. diesel for generators, your boat or other machinery, propane for roasting coffee and more) and leave the rest blank.
Even though you are working out of a home office (and might not have a seperate meter) we recommend you enter an estimation of the electricity your home office consumes. i.e. If your home uses 8000 kWh per year and your office uses 10% of that power, please enter "800".
Renewable energy notice: In case your facility is powered by renewable energy above Island average, please make sure you only enter the amount consumend from the grid. In example: If the facility is powered by 80% renewables and you consume 1000 kWh, please enter "200" since you will only produce emissions from the remaining 20% not covered by renewables.

"Your total business emissions" value represents an emission estimate of what your business produces within the determined time period to offer its services/products. Here are some values for your information to put it in perspective:
US national per capita average annual emissions: 16.5t (2014)
Global per capita average annual emissions: 4.97t (2014)

Please note: We need to know, how many persons you serve each year to determine how much emissions you produce to provide your service to one person. If you are i. e. a tour provider simply enter the number guests you have annually since everybody will produce (or more or less) the same amount of emissions. If you are an accomodation provider, the emissions are based on the number of nights someone stays. Therefore, you need to enter the overall number of overnight stays you provide per year. In example if a family of four stays with you for four nights, it counts as 16 (4x4).
The "offset price for each guest..." is what each guest would need to pay in order to offset 100% of the emissions that are produced by the activity you provide/for each night he/she stays with you at a price of 20$/ton (the regular price for supporting local projects).
If this price is below $5 we recommend to choose option one instead of two. To do so, please go back one page.
If this price is above $5 you can continue with this offset option by continuing to the next page.
Why do we recommend option one for a offset price <$5?
Including an offset option in your booking process will add an aditional step for your customers with a seperate payment form. This additional processing and handling is not feasible for small amounts (processing for one dollar is already >$0.30). By selecting offset option one, your business will pay for the offset at once and you can then collect the offset back from your customers by adding a fee to your price which will not result in extra processing.
In addition, you will be able to market your operation as emission neutral since all emissions are offset.
If you have not done yet, please save your calculation now. By doing that, you will receive a link that will ensure you can access your calculation again in the future. Mahalo.
One of our main drivers at CarbonBuddy is the concept of leading by example. However, these positive examples need to be known to encourage following. Therefore, we created the #ClimateBuddyMap as a platform to spread the word on climate action.
Please note: The map and your entry will be available to the public via the CarbonBuddy website.
This is how your entry could look like:
Thank you for joining the #ClimateBuddyMap!
Your entry will be added within one day after completing this calculation and offsetting your emissions.
Congratulations!
Because you have calculated your emissions for an entire year and offset 100%, you will receive a #CarbonDashboard and ClimateBuddyLabel at NO charge after completing this offset.
We are using PayPal to process payments. In the next step, you can pay either with your PayPal account or by using a credit card.
IMPORTANT!
Because your offset costs are more than $1000 you can also pay by check or direct deposit - if you wish - to avoid processing fees. If so, please save this calculation now by clicking on the "SAVE" button and write us an email at mail@carbonbuddy.com.
We will get back to you shortly. Alternatively, you can also pay via paypal or credit card right now. It is your choice.
