Aloha and Welcome
to our emission calculator. This tool is designed to generate an emission estimation of your Hawaii based Business or other Organization (i.e. not-for-profit, government agancy or university) and is based on the tools and guidelines of the Greenhouse Gas Protocol. Our tool is aimed to serve small to medium sized organizations and will allow you to understand your emissions within a resonable amount of time.
If you run into problems or have a question, you can always contact us at business@carbonbuddy.com
Please note: This tool will NOT generate an emission estimation in full compliance with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol. If this is your goal, please contact us at business@carbonbuddy.com. We would be delighted to assist. Thank you.
How it works:
Save your progress at any time with the "save" button. This will allow you to come back to your calculation at a later point.
Set the time period for this calculation.
We stronlgy recommend to set the time period of your calculation for an entire year. Also, since the calcualtion will based on emissions that have actually occured, the time period for your calculation needs to be in the past. A good way to start would be the past calendar year.
We recommend to calculate emissions for an entire calendar (or fiscal) year. This will enable you to compare calculations in the future and allow you to determine trends more easily.
An additional benefit of calculating emissions for an entire year (365 days) and offsetting 100% of your emissions is, that you will automatically receive a #CarbonDashboard and ClimateBuddyLabel at NO charge. You can use these tools to display your climate leadership on your website, social media and wherever you are in contact with your customers so they know you are doing business climate neutral.
(Please note: Your actual version can differ from the one displayed here)
Before we start:
Within this form we will ask you about a variety of direct (Scope 1 - i.e. fuel you use for vehicles), indirect (Scope 2 - i.e. produced by the generation of electricity your business/organization consumes) as well as business related air-travel (Scope 3) emissions as a result of your operation. The content of this calculator and the calculation processes in the background are based on the "Greenhouse Gas Protocol Corporate Accounting and Reporting Standard" and adopted to the unique needs of businesses and organizations operating in Hawai'i.
You are asked to provide accurate information regarding your emission sources to the best of your knowledge (i.e. standard company travel records, utility bills, ...), as this will allow you to produce the most accurate emission estimation. It is recommended to include all emission sources - even if they are small - to generate a complete inventory. We also encourage you to make use of the "Note Fields" which you will find throughout the calculator to specifiy i.e. data sources and ensure that others in your organization are able to replicate/continue this calculation in the future if neccessary.
As a guiding principle, the calculation should be done in a way so it can be replicated by other staff and entries provided can be verified with records.
With this tool you will be able to better understand the current climate impact of your operation. This assessment can then be used to develop carbon reduction goals so your business/organization can establish a path towards net zero emissions to reduce the negative impacts of climate change.
The first steps in identifying and calculating a company’s emissions is to categorize the GHG sources within that company’s boundaries. GHG emissions typically occur from the following source categories:
Every business has processes, products, or services that generate direct and/or indirect emissions from one or more of the above broad source categories. This calculation tools is organized based on these categories.
IDENTIFY SCOPE 1 EMISSIONS
As a first step, a company should undertake an exercise to identify its direct emission sources in each of the four source categories listed above. Process emissions are usually only relevant to certain industry sectors like oil and gas, aluminum, cement, etc. Manufacturing companies that generate process emissions and own or control a power production facility will likely have direct emissions from all the main source categories. Office-based organizations may not have any direct GHG emissions except in cases where they own or operate a vehicle, combustion device, or refrigeration and air-conditioning equipment. Often companies are surprised to realize that significant emissions come from sources that are not initially obvious.
IDENTIFY SCOPE 2 EMISSIONS
The next step is to identify indirect emission sources from the consumption of purchased electricity, heat, or steam. Almost all businesses generate indirect emissions due to the purchase of electricity for use in their processes or services.
IDENTIFY SCOPE 3 EMISSIONS
This step involves identification of other indirect emissions from a company’s upstream and downstream activities as well as emissions associated with outsourced/contract manufacturing, leases, or franchises not included in scope 1 or scope 2. The inclusion of scope 3 emissions allows businesses to expand their inventory boundary along their value chain and to identify all relevant GHG emissions. This provides a broad overview of various business linkages and possible opportunities for significant GHG emission reductions that may exist upstream or downstream of a company’s immediate operations.
This text is an adopted excerpt of the GHGP Corporate Accounting and Reporting Standard. (https://ghgprotocol.org/corporate-standard)
Please note: Because you are calculating emissions for a small to medium size business or organization the boundaries for this assessment can be set around the entire operation. The important part of this page is to create a record of the scope for this calculation so it can be replicated at a later point (i.e. next year) with new data but the same scope.
If you have questions, please don't hestitate to contact us at: business@carbonbuddy.com and we will guide you towards the best fit for your business/organization.
Please note: Setting the boundaries for a large company or organization can be challenging. The important part of this page is to create a record of the scope for this calculation so it can be replicated at a later point (i.e. next year) with new data but the same scope. The boundary could be i.e. set around an operation of one building, a building complex or the entire business operation in Hawaii. Even though, you know your business best, we might be able to help in setting this boundary for the first time. This is a very important part of your emission inventory. Therefore, please do not hesitate to contact us with questions at: business@carbonbuddy.com. We are looking forward to supporting you in this effort.
Please calculate for each Island seperately. This will lead to most exact emission estimation for your organization. We furthermore recommend that you inlcude the Island name in the name of each calculation (Field "Business name" on page 4) so emissions can be easily allocated to specific operations.
Now that you have set up your business/organization, the calculation process starts. Please remember: In case you will need to collect information to enter in this form, you can always save your calculation with the "Save" button below to ensure progress is saved.
Doing business/running an organization in Hawaii often means travelling large distances for meetings or conferences. Therefore, this calcualtion tool includes Inter-Island as well as Out-of-State air-travel emissions for your business/organizational travel. Please populate the fields below as needed.

Congratulations. You are almost done.
Now that you know how much emissions your business/organization produces to provide its service/product, you can offset these emissions and offer your customers an EMISSION NEUTRAL SERVICE or PRODUCT.
What is the cost?
To find out how much emission offsetting would add to your product/service, simply enter the appropriate number in the field below.
After you select an offset project (next step) you will then see how much it would costs to become emission neutral per unit/product/dollar of revenue. It is likely a small number and you could add this i.e. as a "carbon fee" to your service, product or add it to every dollar you charge. The tool will calculate the number for you.
We understand that organizations like yours are particulary tight on funding but nevertheless might want to become emission neutral. Thus, we recommend that you add the cost of emission offsetting to grant proposals or specifically ask donors to support your organization in becoming carbon neutral.
How do I know what we need to ask for?
1. enter the amount of revenue/your budget for the time period of this calculation in the field below.
2. Continue the form and select an offset project. You will then see how much you would need to add to every offset a dollar of your budget.
