Does Your Employer Offer Regular Pay during Jury Duty?
The U.S. imprisons more than any other country. This fact led a guest speaker on NPR in April 2018 to ask, “Are we more evil than other countries?” To that end, black people make up 13% of the U.S. population but 40% of the prison population! In St. Louis City, blacks are 18 times more likely to be criminalized for alleged drug activity than whites. There are 8 times as many blacks at the Workhouse as there are whites although black people make up less than 50% of the St. Louis City population. And we are twice as likely to be struck from juries! The Organization for Black Struggle launched the Black Jurors Matter campaign in the summer of 2017.
To make matters worse many people avoid jury duty. One reason why is because a potential juror cannot afford the financial loss from being off work. This form is used to shed a light on the employers that do offer their employees regular pay while they are on jury duty. Thank you for your participation!
